Vintage Sterling HAWAII Petroglyph Earrings Cut Out Figure Hawaiian Rock Carving
Vintage Hawaiiana at its best!  Set in sterling silver, these earrings represent one of the ancient carvings or petroglyphs found in the lava rock on the Big Island of Hawaii.  It is interesting how, from our 21st Century perspective, the design, though ancient, manages to also have a cool Mid-century or 1950s Modernist look.  With terrific economy of line and effective use of negative space, the artist clearly communicated and
animated
his subject.  The figure is simply rendered but extremely lively, as if it were dancing.  Cut out and surmounting the slightly concave background, which was oxidized (deliberately darkened) for contrast and definition, the figures seem to be floating in mid air with no visible means of support and the designs really POP.
The oval earrings measure about 1" tall by just over 3/4" wide and are screw on (but could be converted by your jeweler to your preferred type of findings).  They weigh 10.3 grams.
They are signed on the backs "Sterling" and "Hawaii".  The finding wheels are also signed "Sterling."  (Last Photo.)
The earrings are in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition with just surface dirt, scratches and tarnish as expected due to age.  They have a lovely vintage patina with that great oxidation and the even, dark finish that comes only with time; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer's discretion.
So Striking, they are quite Riveting!  Just look at those figures with their animated stances!  They will bring the strength and romance of exotic tropical island history and lore to your wardrobe.  Belonging equally in collections of Hawaiiana, Sterling and of course, earrings and jewelry, they would make a terrific gift - although I doubt you will want to part with them, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.  A fabulous pair of vintage Sterling Hawaiian Petroglyph earrings to add to your collection!
